Thousands of valeters, detailers, vehicle sign writers, accessory fitters, windscreen fitters and tinters in the UK don’t have the right motor insurance and are putting themselves and their businesses at risk. Could you be one of them?
Are you covered?
If there was a car accident whilst you were in control of a customer’s vehicle/working on it, then you would expect your motor insurance would cover any repairs (if needed). You might think so, but if you’re relying on your own personal car insurance policy to cover it then you’d be in for a shock as it wouldn’t and you’d be liable to pay for any repairs yourself. This could cripple your business.
You’ve also got to think about public liability, if a customer slipped over on your premises, would you be covered?
Getting the right cover
You need to get motor trade insurance, whether you have your own premises or not. Some people wrongly assume that it’s only for businesses that sell or repair cares but it’s not. If your job involves vehicles, then it’s the type of insurance you need.
There are three main types available:
Motor Trade Road Risks Insurance– it doesn’t matter if only move vehicles from one side of a carpark to another, you need Motor Trade Road Risks insurance. It’ll cover your work van/car and your customers’ vehicles whilst they’re in your control.
Motor Trade Combined Insurance – if you have your own premises then you’ll need this kind of insurance as it’ll cover your vehicles, customers’ vehicles and your office/workshop.
Motor Trade Hybrid Package– extra cover to give you peace of mind. This would cover you if someone stole your tools or equipment, whether you have your own premises or not. It would also cover road risks, stock of vehicles and road risks (amongst other things).
