It's that time of year when motorists are bombarded with advice telling them to get their oil changed, their engine tuned up and their tyre treads checked ready for winter - but those working in the motor trades need to be ready for the extra work the season brings in.

Here are our top winter tips for mechanics, ranging from the type of service packages you might want to offer customers in the run-up to Christmas and into the new year, and the impact winter could have on your mechanics' insurance.

1. Fluid Checks

Cold weather affects the viscosity of fluids, so even engine oil in good condition might need to be swapped out for a less viscous oil that will flow easily on the coldest days.

Also make sure customers know that different engine types need different coolant, and encourage them to come to you to make sure the right coolant and the right ratio of water and antifreeze are used.

2. Battery Health Test

Bundle a battery health test into other work you carry out - you could offer this as a perk rather than as a paid extra, to help you win work from people who might otherwise go elsewhere.

If you find a battery in poor condition, you can then upsell a replacement battery, while hopefully helping your customers avoid a breakdown somewhere out on a cold, icy road this winter.

3. Heater Checks

With all the talk of engines, tyres and radiators, it's easy to forget about comfort inside the car, but the heaters are crucial not only to keep passengers warm, but also to de-mist and de-ice the windows.

Offer a basic check of the heating system, vents and filters, again perhaps bundled with other services like coolant/antifreeze checks, so that you get any extra work from this area that's often missed.

4. Public Liability

If you allow customers onto your premises, even if only to pay you or to collect their car after its service or repair, make sure you have adequate public liability cover.

Remember that in winter, floors can be wet or icy, and it may even be dark during working hours, so it's crucial to cover yourself against any costs in case an accident occurs on your premises.

5. Road Risks

Finally, if you transport customers' vehicles on public roads - for example if you offer a collection service for cars with flat batteries - check that you are covered against road risks.

Again, the risk of an accident due to poor visibility or slippery roads can be much greater in winter, so as we head into the season it's the best time to check that your mechanics' insurance policy covers against it.
